What the Committee Does

πŸ¦ͺ Shellfish Management

Advises on the management of Yarmouth’s shellfish resources including quahogs, oysters, scallops, and soft-shell clams. Works with the Natural Resources/Shellfish Division on seeding programs, harvest regulations, and shellfish bed closures due to water quality.

βš“ Moorings & Harbor Management

Advises on mooring policies, harbor regulations, and safe navigation in Yarmouth’s harbors and coastal waters. Reviews mooring applications and recommends policies to balance recreational boating with environmental protection.

🚀 Boat Ramp & Access

Advises on public boat ramp access, launch facilities, and waterway access points. Yarmouth has multiple public launch sites along Nantucket Sound and the Bass River. The committee addresses parking, hours, fees, and maintenance of these public access areas.

🌿 Coastal Habitat Protection

Works with Conservation Commission and WRAC to protect salt marshes, eelgrass beds, and other coastal habitats vital to healthy fisheries. Advises on management of non-native invasive species and coordinates with state and federal agencies on coastal resource issues.

Active Issues & Current Focus

Shellfish Bed Water Quality
Shellfish beds in Yarmouth’s coastal waters face periodic closures due to bacterial contamination from stormwater runoff and boat waste. The committee coordinates with the Board of Health and WRAC to address pollution sources and expand certified harvest areas.
Shellfish Seeding & Aquaculture
The committee advises on annual shellfish seeding programs to replenish natural populations, and on aquaculture permits for private oyster and quahog growing operations. Aquaculture has grown significantly on Cape Cod as a sustainable local food source.
Eelgrass Decline
Eelgrass β€” critical habitat for bay scallops and other species β€” has declined dramatically in Yarmouth’s coastal waters due to excess nitrogen. The committee tracks eelgrass surveys and supports efforts to reduce nitrogen loading to help restore this vital habitat.
Bass River Management
The Bass River forms Yarmouth’s border with Dennis and is a popular recreational waterway. The committee advises on navigation, speed limits, mooring management, and coordinating with Dennis on shared resource management along the river.

Meetings & Agendas

The Waterways & Shellfish Advisory Committee meets monthly at Yarmouth Town Hall. Meeting dates, agendas, and minutes are posted on the town’s Agenda Center. Meetings are open to the public and are particularly relevant to boaters, fishermen, and coastal property owners.

Shellfishing in Yarmouth: Public Information

Yarmouth residents and license holders may harvest shellfish from approved areas in town waters. Annual shellfish permits are available through the Natural Resources/Shellfish Division. Check with the town for current open/closed area maps before harvesting, as closures change based on water quality testing. Commercial and recreational harvest regulations are set under state and local authority.
